Come, knead, taste – indulge your senses and share unforgettable moments.

When dough becomes more than just bread

It all begins with small steps. Local hosts welcome you with a glass of sparkling wine, then provide you with an apron and a chef’s hat before guiding you into the kitchen, where simple yet carefully selected ingredients await – flour, salt, yeast, and love. Under their guidance, you prepare the dough and leave it to rise while you enjoy the best that Bela Krajina has to offer – local wines, snacks, and the warmth that only a place where hospitality is a way of life can provide.

While the dough rises, you can explore the old town centre of Metlika. Three charming squares, rich with stories told by the walls of historic houses, take you on a journey into the past. The walk becomes a bridge between generations who have shaped this land with dedication and care.

Seven cuts and nine pinches later

When you return, a true technical challenge awaits. You shape the dough into a traditional pogača – the only bread where you must figure out how to turn squares into a circle. Seven precise cuts in one direction and seven in the other, a brush of egg, a few pinches of coarse salt and cumin, and your pogača is ready for the oven. The aroma that soon fills the room is unforgettable. Equally memorable are the stories about pogača, tradition, and life in Bela Krajina, shared by local hosts in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Then comes the highlight – the pogača, golden and still warm, is placed on the table. You learn that it is best enjoyed with homemade bacon, pairs perfectly with traditional sausage, and is irresistible when dipped into dark pumpkin seed oil while still warm. Traditionally, it is not cut but broken – everyone takes their own piece and shares it with others. The taste? Warm, rich, comforting – the taste of Bela Krajina.

Why you should experience it?

Because there are few moments in life when tradition, flavour and human connection come together so naturally. The “Enjoy Belokranjska pogača with friends” experience is not just an opportunity to learn a new skill, but also to create lasting memories. It is a moment to slow down, spend time with loved ones, and discover the culture of a place through taste, smell and touch. A true sensory experience.

Take your pogača with you as you explore Bela Krajina by bike, enjoy it during a relaxing descent along the warm Kolpa River, or prepare a picnic surrounded by white birch trees. Save the last pieces for an evening tasting of exceptional Bela Krajina wines at your chosen local winery, and by the end of the day, you will have experienced the true essence of Bela Krajina – authentic, genuine and welcoming.
