It flows in the far southeast of Slovenia and forms 113 km of the natural border between the two countries. Its largest tributary on the Slovenian side is the Lahinja, the longest river in Bela Krajina, which flows into the Kolpa near Primostek. In the past, many mills and sawmills operated along the dams that once crossed the river, and some remains can still be seen today. The area is home to numerous bird species such as storks, grey herons and wild ducks. In addition to more than 30 species of fish, the river is also inhabited by otters, while the riverbanks are home to the European pond turtle, the only native turtle species in Slovenia.

Through thoughtful interaction with nature, people have shaped an idyllic cultural landscape of river rapids, karst sinkholes, colourful fields and picturesque birch forests known as steljniki. Both the natural and cultural heritage are specially protected within the Kolpa Landscape Park.

The Kolpa is known as the warmest and cleanest river in Slovenia, offering a wide range of activities on, by and in the water. Are you tempted by an adrenaline-filled rafting experience? Or a peaceful walk along the riverbanks? The Kolpa invites you! Well-maintained cycling and walking trails provide an excellent way to explore both the river and the lifestyle along it. The deep riverbed and playful currents create ideal conditions for rafting. Its clean waters and rich fish population attract anglers, while the calmer stretches offer excellent opportunities for canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, swimming and bathing. In its lower course, the calm and warm river can reach temperatures of up to 30°C, while the lively water over the rapids provides a natural massage and relaxation. Several campsites are located along the river, offering rest for individuals and relaxation for entire families. Here, both recreational athletes and adrenaline enthusiasts can find exactly what they are looking for.

If you are still not convinced – in 2010, the Kolpa River received the prestigious European Destination of Excellence (EDEN) award in Slovenia, granted by the European Commission as part of initiatives promoting sustainable tourism.

["post-1160","naravna-dediscina","type-naravna-dediscina","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
