It was in Metlika that, on 18 September 1869, the first firefighting brigade in Slovenia was established.

The museum spaces, which the Firefighting Association of Slovenia and the museum obtained in 1993, are divided into three exhibition sections. The gallery presents the beginnings of Slovenian firefighting up to the First World War. Preserved items include firefighting uniforms, command helmets, axes and other equipment used in extinguishing fires, as well as firefighting decorations. The main exhibition hall presents firefighting activities between the two world wars and after the Second World War, with a strong emphasis on training, competitions and the development of young firefighters, ensuring the future of the firefighting organisation. In the basement, historical firefighting equipment is displayed, including fire pumps mounted on four-wheeled horse-drawn carts. In the exhibition pavilion next to the castle building, numerous manual fire pumps are on display, including an outstanding example from 1836 from Grahovo near Cerknica.

In 2003, the museum was renamed the Slovenian Firefighting Museum Dr Branko Božič.
