From the Late Stone Age onwards, people began to settle in the land between the Gorjanci Hills and the Kolpa River. Until late antiquity, various peoples lived here, leaving traces that are now visible in the museum’s archaeological collection.

The cultural-historical collection presents the history of Bela Krajina from the establishment of towns in the 14th century to the period of the Illyrian Provinces. Particularly difficult times occurred in the 15th and 16th centuries, when Ottoman raids brought destruction, violence and looting to the region.

The largest part of the collection is dedicated to the people of Bela Krajina and is presented in the ethnological section. The name “Bela Krajina people” (Beli Kranjci) first appeared in the first half of the 19th century, referring to the characteristic white traditional clothing worn at the time; these inhabitants later gave their name to the entire region.

The modern history collection highlights the most important events of the first half of the 20th century. In the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, Bela Krajina slowly emerged from underdevelopment. The region had no industry, only a few larger craft workshops and the Kanižarica coal mine. At the outbreak of the Second World War, it was occupied by Italy, and after Italy’s capitulation in September 1943, the area between the Kolpa and the Gorjanci Hills became a liberated partisan territory – a unique phenomenon not only in the Second World War, but in the history of warfare in general.

["post-1467","kulturne-znamenitost","type-kulturne-znamenitost","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
